My initial thoughts on Beta 3.0 posted by [Elrond] | 7/12/2002 9:09:40 AM

I hope to compose a full review as I did with Beta 2, in the fullness of time. For now, here are my initial impressions.

The Good

The FG42 is my new love. Fires kinda like the BAR, but with what feels like slightly more recoil. You are given the option of selecting a scoped '42, or one with a bipod. I only tried the scoped one, but it was sweet J .

The Grease Gun is great, too. Slower ROF than the Thompson, and feels like the rounds have more impact. Certainly the current weapon of choice among the Allied paratroopers, but that may be because of novelty value.

The para style maps are actually more fun than I expected, although I do feel that the similarities between this and CS have already drawn in a lot of CS players. Not necessarily a bad thing … except for the time last night when I joined a Jolt serer, nailed the WHOLE of the allied team, and was then accused of cheating. 8-0 is nothing big, really, and I've been playing this game since beta 1.0 back in January 2001. These guys who have never played before have a lot of cheek, but then again, being called a cheat is a back-handed compliment.

The Bad

The waiting-out time is boring as hell, and really quite infuriating. When you join a server, you may have to wait up to 4 mins to get into a game. AAARGH!!

Whilst PIU has done some great work on the player animations, I don't think it's really necessary to see the allied paratrooper extend the stock of the Grease Gun every time you change to it.

The Ugly

If you go prone, you actually bounce up and down a short distance, constantly. Very scruffy. Don't know whether this is intentional or not yet, but it looks stupid.

There also appear to be some problems with sound. Occasionally you will not hear any bullet sounds when firing. I think this is related to the netcode

There also appears to be a serious problem with the netcode .. again. Looks like the same issue as with the first release of 2.0. I'll be chasing this one down.

Teamplay workshops - Required Schoolbooks! posted by [Elrond] | 7/6/2002 10:02:45 PM

Those of you who are looking forward to the Teamplay workshops (I understand there are quite a lot of you) will need to have obtained the following information and software.

The [OwP] mission statement will obviously be required reading. All participants are required to understand the mission and direction of the [OwP] .. after all, the Teamplay workshops are all about building skills to deliver the [OwP] objectives. Similarly, participants will be expected to uphold the [OwP] code of conduct.

It goes without saying that all participants will need to have installed Half-Life to the latest patch and Day of Defeat Beta 2.1. For communication and discussion before match we will be using mIRC, and we will be using TeamSpeak in-game.

Please download and install the relevant software and be familiar with the appropriate doctrine if you intend to participate.

As far as IRC is concerned, we will be using Quakenet IRC - (irc.barrysworld.eu.org), channel #DoD-OwP.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Also … on the subject of the Teamplay workshops. posted by [Elrond] | 7/5/2002 12:37:53 PM

The first four lesson plans have already been written. Once the consultation on availability of students is completed, a date will be set and the syllabus published. I can state now that we aim to set the training into three four-week elements, interspersed with "match mayhem" events, where the students can pile into a sizeable server and just duke it out, applying all the skills they will have learned so far.

The Directing Staff is FNG, Bismarck and myself thus far, although we will be lucky enough to offer our students "guest instructors" occasionally, including some top ranking players and well known members of the DoD community! All very "hush hush", of course.
